What do you need to know about self-consumption?

Self-consumption is understood as consumption by one or more consumers of electrical energy from production facilities close to those of consumption and associated with them.

WHAT ARE THE TYPES OF SELF-CONSUMPTION?

There may be two types of self-consumption:

  1. Modalities of supply with self-consumption without surpluses. When there is an anti-dumping mechanism that prevents the injection of surplus energy into the transport or distribution network.
  2. Modalities of supply with self-consumption with surpluses. When the generation facilities can, in addition to supplying energy for self-consumption, inject the generated excess energy into the transport and distribution network.

Likewise, the generation facility (s) designed to generate energy for any of the self-consumption modalities may be associated with participating consumers:

  1. Connecting through the internal network of the associated consumers or through direct lines, so they will be called self-consumption in nearby indoor network installations.
  2. Connecting through the distribution network, provided that they belong to the same low voltage network of the transformation center or that, when connected in low voltage, the distance between generation and consumption is less than 2.000/500 m (depending on technology) or located within the same cadastral reference. In these cases, they will be called self-consumption in nearby facilities through the network.

The details of the modalities and requirements are defined in RD 244/2019, which are summarized in the following table: (Source: IDAE / Self Consumption Processing Guide https://www.idae.es/index.php/tecnologias/energias-renovables/oficina-de-autoconsumo)

What procedures do I have to do with e-distribución?

In the case of self-consumers with surpluses, the procedures with e-distribución are the following:

1. Application for access and connection to the e-distribución grid: formalization of a request for generation connection to us, as a Distributor. The self-consumption with surpluses whose generation power is ≤15 kW and are located in urbanized land (with the endowments and services required by the urban legislation) will be exempt from this process. The request for access and connection can be made through our website.

2. Answer connection point (only applies if the self-consumer has requested access and connection): We will reply to you by reporting the point of consent to the red of distribution and of the Technical and Economic Conditions  in relation to the actuations that will be necessaries in the power grid distribution.

3. Issuance of the technical-economic conditions: After acceptance of the connection point by the self-consumer, we send you the Technical and Economic Conditions in relation to the actions that may be necessary in the electricity distribution network.

4. Technical Access Contract (CTA): this is the document that gathers the technical relations between e-distribución and the self-consumer from the moment of the connection. This document must be requested to us before finalizing your self-consumption installation through the email address: ATR-generadores.edistribucion@enel.com. For those self-consumption that do not require access and connection procedures, the signing of a CTA.

5. Verification of the measurement configuration according to RD 1110/2007: once the self-consumption installation has been finalized and legalized by you, we must verify the measurement configuration before connecting it to the network. You will have to request this verification through the email address: Inspeccionautoconsumo@enel.com .

6. Certificates of the reading manager and network manager: in case you need to register your installation as a producer, the certificates included in articles 39.1.d) "Network Manager" and "Reading Manager" of RD 413/2014 you must request them through the email address: Conexiones.edistribucion@enel.com

Finally, in order for the supply contract you have through your supplier to include the self-consumption modality you have chosen, it needs to be updated, for which you should contact your supplier. After adapting your supply contract, the installation will already be in service. If you have surpluses, the installation will be ready to compensate them in your bill (installations with power <=100 kW) or to sell them to the market, depending on the chosen modality.

Autoconsumptions in nearby facilities through production power distribution network equal to or less than 15 kW that are placed on built-up land and have the required allotments and services required by urban legislation, do require the management of an access and connection request to assess and manage the distribution network connection jobs reserved for the distributor and/or the supply of its auxiliary services.
